  • November 5, 2011 - 20 people were arrested at an Occupy Atlanta demonstration in and around Woodruff Park. Police put out a statement claiming that those arrested "either refused to leave Woodruff Park after 11 pm closing time or impeded Peachtree street and other City Roads by blocking them and not allowing police to open them to normal traffic."

<br />
Occupy Atlanta hosted a press conference with Reverend Jesse Jackson at Peachtree-Pine, the downtown homeless shelter where members of Occupy Atlanta are currently staying on the 4th floor.<br />
<br />
Jackson touched on many issues ranging from "the wealth gap to the health gap," and spoke about the two party system saying "the two parties are not the same, we do have a choice," he also touched on issues of poverty, foreclosure, affordable housing and the forgiveness of student loans.

<br />
Police issued a warning at 11:50 p.m. to protesters and people congregating in the downtown park that officers would arrest those who did not vacate the park.<br />
<br />
Nearly one hour later, a large group of officers wearing eye goggles marched into the park and moved toward the group of approximately 50 protesters who'd volunteered to be arrested. They handcuffed the protesters with plastic ties and led -- or in some cases, carried -- them to a makeshift processing station at the foot of the SunTrust building.

  • Congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis visited the Occupy Atlanta rally at Woodruff Park October 7 approximately 45 minutes after its planning session, or General Assembly, started. Despite saying he did not want to speak, the civil rights icon was invited to address to the crowd. <br />
<br />
When the topic of allowing Lewis to speak was presented to the group, "Joe" (pictured in red) held up his arms to "block" Lewis from speaking.<br />
<br />
"Joe" said he was against Lewis speaking because the movement is "not about one individual" and that it has been built on the idea of "no hierarchy." The crowd decided the congressman could speak after the General Assembly, but Lewis had to leave for a previous engagement.<br />
<br />
"I support the protesters in New York and here," Lewis told me before leaving Woodruff Park. "It is the right time and the right place to be... It is the will of the people. When I was young we did similar actions. It is grassroots democracy at its best. I think something good will come of the moment."

  • October 15, 2011 - Lisa Mestas, a registered nurse, has been working the medic tent at Occupy Atlanta for a week. "I have 4 kids so I bring them to school and then I come here." She says she has treated mostly bumps and bruises at the Occupy site. "I will be here as long as it takes for the government and corporations to pay attention to what we are saying. We want the best lives for our kids."
